Janneke van Casteren
As a PhD researcher at the European University Institute (2016-2020) I explore the interaction between national courts and the European Court of Justice. I am particularly interested in how national courts requesting a preliminary ruling respond to and apply the preliminary ruling they receive from the Court of Justice in their follow-up judgment. This interdisciplinary research involves both a quantitative and qualitative empirical study. I hold a BA in Liberal Arts and Sciences from University College Roosevelt and an LLB from Utrecht University. I obtained my Master of Laws degree (LLM) and Research Master in Law degree (MPhil) from Tilburg University. Additionally, I hold an LLM in Comparative, European and International Laws from the European University Institute.
My main research interests are EU law and constitutional law. In particular, I am interested in:
- European Court of Justice
- Judicial behaviour
- Area of Freedom, Security and Justice
- Empirical legal research
- The intersection of law and politics
At NoLesLaw, I am involved in ‘The Coding Project’. Also, as member of the executive board of the European Journal of Legal Studies (EJLS), I coordinate the cooperation between the EJLS and NoLesLaw.
